Bernese Award for Environmental Research

1997

Main Prize

The Bernese Environmental Research Award 1997 goes to Dr. Thomas Hofer for his dissertation, “Floods in Bangladesh: A Highland–Lowland Interaction?” His work is an essential contribution to clarifying the causes of annual flooding in the Indian subcontinent, and in this way provides a counter-argument to the accusations being levelled at the mountain farmers of the Himalayas. It is part of a project of the Institute of Geography at the University of Bern and is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the United Nations University (UNU).
